ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Albuquerque area is facing a lack of affordable housing options. But now, local governments are coming together to try to solve the problem.
The Middle Rio Grande Housing Collaborative was created “to address the overwhelming need for affordable housing,” according to Bernalillo County. The first meeting of the collaboration between the county and the City of Albuquerque will be Thursday, March 28.
County Commission Chair Barbara Baca said in a press release, “This partnership has taken many months to come together and I am excited for the members’ work that will result in real solutions to the housing crisis we currently face.” “By pooling our resources and revenues, we can more effectively address the needs of our constituents and leverage federal and state funding for much-needed affordable housing.”
The newly formed association consisted of five members elected by the city and county. They will be introduced at the inaugural meeting. There will also be time for public comment.
“MRGHC is a unique approach to providing much-needed affordable housing that will help respond quickly to development needs,” City Councilor Tammy Fiebelkorn said in a press release. “It’s exactly the same collaborative approach to housing for our community; I’m anxious to start seeing results!”
