ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It’s not a common sight but the Albuquerque Police Department’s mounted patrol nabbed a suspicious shoplifter outside the Walgreens at Coors and Central. Earlier this month, the Albuquerque Police Horse Mounted Unit said they came out of their trailer when they were alerted to a shoplifter. The police chased the suspects without any hesitation.
Officers were conducting a pedestrian safety operation as part of efforts to clean up Central. Officials say the suspect, 30-year-old Mark Chacon, allegedly stole $230 worth of merchandise.
During the chase, officers repeatedly ordered Chacon to stop, but he continued. He is even seen running in traffic. Soon, other officers arrived and arrested Chacon. APD says situations like these prove how having a horse helps.
“Very pleased with the officers, they are doing their job and they are doing it right. There is no question that they are within our standard operating procedures,” said Sgt. Mike Schroeder, APD’s Mounted Patrol Unit.
APD also alerted other potential criminals. “I can also tell you, if you want to run away from us, you’re going to get tired and go to jail. We have horses, they won’t tire quickly,” said Sgt. Schroeder.
Meanwhile, the suspect, Mark Chacon, is facing several charges including shoplifting, fleeing from police and possession of drug paraphernalia.
