SANTA FE, NM (KRQE) – Medicaid users in New Mexico can now get Opil, an over-the-counter oral contraceptive. The approval is part of an effort to expand pregnancy and contraceptive care, the New Mexico Department of Human Services said.
“We are dedicated to ensuring access to health care for all Medicaid consumers,” said Alana Dancis, chief medical officer of the New Mexico Medicaid program, in a press release. “Opil’s coverage is a step forward in empowering people to have more choice in their reproductive health care – we encourage our customers and pharmacists to familiarize themselves with this new coverage option.”
Medicaid consumers can get contraception at no cost, the state says. Customers just need to ask for the medicine at the pharmacy counter.
Medicaid in New Mexico offers free pregnancy tests and emergency contraception. There is also a hotline (1-833-796-8773) for reproductive health care questions and help.
