animal welfare: A concept that describes the quality of life of an animal. Good animal welfare means that animals are safe, comfortable, healthy, well-nourished, and able to express their instinctive behaviors – the things they are born knowing how to do.
behavior: the way something, often a person or other organism, acts or conducts itself toward others.
biology: the study of living things. Scientists who study them are known as biologists.
Breeding: (noun) Animals of the same species that are genetically similar in that they share reliable and characteristic traits. For example, the German Shepherd and the Dachshund are examples of dog breeds. (verb) To produce offspring through reproduction.
canine: A member of the biological family Canidae. They are carnivores and omnivores. The family includes dogs, wolves, foxes, foxes, and coyotes. (in anatomy) the fine tooth of a mammal that separates its incisors from its premolars. These canine teeth are especially long in carnivores.
Consciousness: the mental process of thinking, remembering, learning information, and interpreting the data that the senses send to the brain.
domesticated: A process of producing a tame version of an animal from a wild animal, which can take thousands of years. Domestic animals are animals that have been bred in captivity.
Evolutionary Biologist: Someone who studies the adaptive processes that have led to the diversity of life on Earth These scientists can study many topics, including the microbiology and genetics of living organisms, how species change to adapt, and the fossil record (to assess how different ancient species are related to each other and to their modern-day relatives).
Gene: (adjective genetic) A segment of DNA that contains the code or instructions for a cell’s protein production. Children inherit genes from their parents. Genes affect how an organism looks and behaves.
guess: (v. hypothesize) a proposed explanation for an event. In science, a hypothesis is an idea that must be rigorously tested before being accepted or rejected.
movement: Ability to move from place to place.
the physical: (adjective) A term for things that exist in the real world, as opposed to memory or imagination. It can also refer to the properties of substances such as their size and non-chemical interactions (such as when one block exerts a force on another block). (in biology and medicine) the term can refer to the body as in physical examination or physical activity.
Psycholinguistics: A field of research that looks for links between language and how the mind works, including the ability to learn language. People who work in this field are known as psycholinguists.
the species: A group of similar organisms capable of producing offspring that can survive and reproduce.
characteristics: characteristic of something. (in genetics) a quality or characteristic that can be inherited.
