Five events of Friday
(1) 2024 El Santuario de Chimayó, Tomé Hill pilgrimages – Every year on Good Friday many New Mexicans make pilgrimages to El Santuario de Chimayó and Tomé Hill. The Santuario de Chimayó is considered a sacred pilgrimage site. And many people travel there for the ‘Tierra Bendita’ or holy dirt; Many believe that it has healing properties. People make pilgrimages up to Tom Hill to reach the three croshes that sit on top of the hill. According to Santa Fe County, about 30,000 people make the pilgrimage to Santuario de Chimayo each year during Holy Week.
(2) Organization sees highest number of homeless families in need of help in ABQ – An Albuquerque organization working to break the cycle of homelessness in the metro says it will be able to help more families on its growing waiting list, thanks to a multimillion-dollar grant. Cuidando Los Niños offers free childcare and support services to families experiencing homelessness The company said that last year, the waitlist for their services reached an all-time high, forcing them to expand their staff. The group is receiving a $2 million grant from well-known philanthropist Mackenzie Scott, which will allow them to help more families.
(3) Warm and Windy Weather for Easter Weekend – Temperatures will be warmer than Thursday, with highs in the 60s, 70s and 80s. Winds are light in most places this morning, but winds will pick up by this afternoon. Winds will pick up on Saturday with gusts in excess of 40 to 55 mph across the state on Sunday. Temperatures will be mild over the weekend.
(4) City of Albuquerque Moves to Sell Coronado Dog Park – The City of Albuquerque is moving to sell the Coronado Dog Park between 2nd and 3rd Streets near I-40. The city says the park doesn’t get enough use and the money from that sale could be put to better use. The Parks and Recreation Department is requesting that the City Council declare the park “not needed” for official purposes. A February appraisal valued the 1.79-acre lot at just over a million dollars. If the City Council approves the sale, the city says it wants to use the money to build a new dog park in Wells Park, just a few blocks from Coronado Park.
(5) Isotopes to host season opener Friday night – The 2024 baseball season is here and the ‘Tops are set to begin Friday night. The Isotopes will open the season with a three-game homestand against the El Paso Chihuahuas. Friday night’s opener starts at 6:35 and the first 3,000 fans will receive an ear flap hat. In total, three of the Rockies top prospects will suit up for Albuquerque on Friday.
