NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Every year on Good Friday many New Mexicans travel to El Santuario de Chimayo and Tome Hill.

Some people start their journey in Santa Fe and others walk as far as Albuquerque. The Santuario de Chimayó is considered a sacred pilgrimage site. And many people travel there for the ‘Tierra Bendita’ or holy dirt; Many believe that it has healing properties. People make pilgrimages up to Tom Hill to reach the three croshes that sit on top of the hill. Crews have taken extra measures to ensure the safety of all pilgrims. Drivers should expect delays and are encouraged to use caution on the road.

KRQE News 13 spoke with some people who were traveling to El Santuario de Chimayo. “20 years ago I went to church with some health problems and I truly believe that something happened to me there. From then on I started walking and since then I haven’t stopped. It doesn’t matter rain, shine, snow,” said Pedro Aranda.
